xR Video Walls

What is an xR Wall?

xR is a type of virtual production technology that integrates virtual reality and extended reality, simulating the effect of a real scene in a virtual 3D space. Compared with traditional green screen production, it can reduce complicated post-production work, and at the same time allow actors to interact with the virtual elements of the scene, helping achieve a more realistic and natural production effect. Owing to the advantages of self-illumination and simulation of real light and shadow reflection, recent years have seen rapid growth in LED display applications in the virtual production sector.

When Virtual Production Meets LEDs

LED displays are being implemented to create immersive and dynamic backgrounds. The application of LED screens for virtual production and filming is now normal practice. The LED virtual studio integrates fully configured LED walls, camera tracking systems and real-time rendering technology. These systems apply advanced technologies like motion capture, and xR (extended reality, includes augmented reality, mixed reality, and virtual reality) to complete virtual production without chroma keying and costly post-production.

Large LED video walls can deliver dynamic digital sets that replace traditional green screens. To create even more immersive environments, an LED ceiling and LED floor can be further added with great flexibility. Meanwhile, the light coming from the LEDs provide realistic colours and reflections on the figures and props, generating a more natural and realistic environment for actors to engage with the background scenes.

Through the lens, a full picture can be presented to directors and the Director of Photography to discuss real-time adjustments before shooting.

Advantages

Higher flexibility

No need for complicated and expensive set designs. LED display can be spliced into different shapes to meet the shooting needs. Virtual production background can be changed without limitation to save the cost of set transfer and long-time post-production.

Unlimited creativity

Boundless creativity can be generated and presented on the LED walls. By interfacing with the camera, LED walls can be virtually extended into a full virtual world even under a single environment.

Realistic restoration

7680Hz extreme high refresh rate, 16bit+ grayscale, 1500nit brightness, accurate color restoration and no color cast from different angles add value to LED screens to restore a realistic filming background without color spill brought from green-screen production.

Real-time production

Virtual environment is being generated on the server in real time. Tweaking is allowed on location to perfect the produced content. The shorten workflows streamline the post-production process and ease budget and time pressure.

Strong compatibility

LED display provides high compatibility & interoperability with the real-time rendering engines (Unreal Engine, Notch), media servers and platforms (Disguise, Pixotope) and tracking equipment systems (Mo-sys, Stype, BlackTrax, Optitrack, Vicon, etc.).

Immersive experience

Dynamic digital background is no doubt providing a more immersive environment to actors and actresses on set to perfect their performance than traditional green or blue screens.

How LEDs Work for Virtual Sets

Virtual graphics can be rendered and presented onto the LED displays. With the camera swinging around and angles changing, the LED background can be shifted precisely. Which simply can't be achieved with green screens. This allows the motion-tracked cameras to apply traditional cinematography techniques within the virtual settings. Combined with on-site props and environmental simulated auxiliaries such as lighting to create a strong sense of reality. Cinematic movements with parallax effect can be achieved so the actor or object in the foreground moves at a different speed than the LED background behind, amplifying the illusion of filming at the specific location.

Key Features

Frame Multiplexing

Supports frame multiplexing allowing users to reframe multiple video feeds in the same time field. Utilizing the camera's genlock phase offset, it becomes possible to output multiple effects simultaneously within a single shooting scene, improving work efficiency and reducing cost.

Shutter Fit

Supports synchronization of LED display refresh rate and camera shutter parameters, allowing the LED display to automatically adapt to camera expo- sure time and frequency, alleviating scan lines.

Phase Offset

Adjusting the output phase offset value allows the LED display and camera to perfectly match. This helps prevent black field and image tearing from being captured by the camera when shooting the LED display.

HFR

Supports high frame rates up to 120Hz, 144Hz, or even 240Hz. This allows smooth representation of video featuring high-speed moving objects.

Colour Replacement

Supports unrestricted colour replacement, with minimal impact on other colours.

14CH Color Correction

Precise adjustment of hue, saturation, and brightness of primary, secondary and tertiary colors, with basic adjustment of black and white, ensuring perfect colors that retain their intended beauty.

Color Curve + 3D LUT

Curve adjustment and importing of 3D LUT files let you manage color in creative and artistic ways, just like a Hollywood colorist.

Contrast + Black level

Allows independent adjustment of highlights and shadows by contrast and black level, avoiding overexposure in bright content but deliver

Scenario Presets

Different display requirements are necessary to meet the needs of different shooting scenarios. Presets allow users to save settings in advance, including brightness, color temperature, gamma, and more, all retrievable with a single button press.

Dual Image Booster

The all-new MX series solution is equipped with Image Booster 2.0 and Dynamic Booster technologies, which can improve the performance of grayscale, color and contrast ratio, creating an immersive view to fulfill the requirements necessary for xR applications.
